RARE WATER VOLE COLONY FOUND
Rare water voles have been found thriving on a patch of grassland not much bigger than the size of a dining table 700m (2.296ft) up a hillside. They were recorded during a survey of the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve in Wester Ross.
NEW LICHEN DISCOVERED IN WALES
Welsh conservationists have found an internationally important lichen that has never been seen in Wales before. They discovered the lichen in the grounds of Gregynog Hall. The lichen looks like a splash of grey paint and is known as enterographa sorediata. Its surface has patches of flour-like granules, whilst if you scratch the grey bits the black, scribble-like fruits are revealed. This lichen has never been found outside of the British Isles -it only survived at Gregynog because the landed gentry had a passion for parkland and the picturesque look of the knarled ancient trees on which lichen thrive.
